The contemporary American kitchen does not stand still. Just like her country, she is constantly reinventing and bettering herself. Today, the American kitchen has more looks than a New York City fashion show runway and has become the ultimate multi-purpose room.

If you can imagine it, you most likely can realize your dream kitchen. And as the country thankfully turns the calendar to a hopefully much brighter 2021, America’s kitchens are thinking big and bold for the new year.

“With cool new kitchen brands popping up and lots of innovative design ideas and clever twists on old appliance designs on display in kitchen showrooms across the country, there are plenty of on-trend looks and state-of-the-art appliances to pick from,” Home & Gardens.com’s Jennifer Ebert writes.

Here are 2021’s hottest and most in demand kitchen design trends:

Marble

The rock star royalty of today’s chic kitchens, 2021 will be the year of strongly veiled marble, the more dazzling the better, Ebert writes.

“If there’s one thing that’s storming the style charts and shaking up interiors, it’s the return of marble,” notes Ebert.

Return of the Wood

Once design passé, wood is now back in cool retro style.

Subtle-grained ash, which is paler than oak or walnut, can highlight the warm tones in manmade stone.

Going Dark

Dim the lights as black, an often overlooked accent color, is returning to add a rich atmosphere to America’s kitchens.

Black walls, cabinetry and work surfaces are cool, rustic, and luxe.

Clever, Compact Cool

Minimum clutter equals maximum efficiency and a sleek, clean, cool-functioning kitchen.

“Whether narrow, square or broken plan, where space is at a premium, compact kitchens come to the rescue,” Ideal Home.com’s Tamara Kelly writes.

Hot Water on Tap

With more Americans working from home and needing instant access to hot coffee between Zoom calls, hot water taps are in demand with sales skyrocketing.

Extracting Air, Installing Functional Style

The American kitchen of tomorrow is designing quality air circulation through extractor fans.

These systems remove odors and vapors from their source, directly from the hob, and draw them downward before they have a chance to permeate the air. Extractor fans are becoming a go-to air circulation system for the open plan kitchen.

Calm Simplicity

The most dazzling stylistic bells and whistles can’t rival the unparalleled functionality and easy use and look of streamlined kitchens.

Integrated appliances and hidden, smart storage are making kitchens more self-functional and giving hard-working families a break. The best news: the less-is-more minimalist look is easy to achieve. Today, simple kitchen living is essential.

“With more people living in compact quarters, having a kitchen that is not only stylish but space-saving will be on top of mind in 2021,” House & Home stresses.

Vent Hoods

The classic stainless steel kitchen look had its day, but doesn’t have a future as America’s most style-friendly kitchen décor.

Custom vent hoods with a touch of brass are an eye-catching, warm look.

The Hybrid Islands

Today’s kitchen islands are Swiss Army Knives of stylish functionality and hybrid islands that offer kitchen prep, spacious dining room and a makeshift classroom if needed.

Vintage Hutches

No longer just a storage space for tableware, glassware and Grandma’s china plates, vintage hutches are infusing the new year’s kitchens with warmth and character.

No longer is the kitchen just the engine of the American home. It’s now the heart of the home in a post-COVID America. In 2021, the American kitchen will continue to reinvent itself to become more functional, more stylish, more efficient and comfortable, and even more cutting edge.

For the American kitchen does not stand still.

As Better Homes & Garden’s Kristina McGuirk notes, the kitchen of 2021 is the kitchen of the future: warm and welcoming with “staying power.”
